so in today's video i'm going to walk through 12 very simple
actionable steps which i recommend that you take
full advantage of on your website immediately
you want to generate traffic to your website first of all let me in order for me to feel honest and authentic i need to look you in the eyes so
we'll put the seo visionary goggles away for the time being we'll break it out maybe later on to look into the future but i've been doing seo for a long time and the length of time is not as important as the results that i've been getting
so right about now i'm going to show you some screen captures of my current ranking in some of the keywords that i rank for
so like web design i'm the number one ranker
and yes this sounds arrogant and yes i am right uh i challenge you this show me one person in north america that owns a web development company that's getting more organic traffic to their website
than i am show me one you can't i challenge you if i'm wrong i'll admit i'm wrong
show me one right so we're getting anywhere from 30 to 50 000 unique visitors to our website
on earthworld.com a month organically because we rank for real keywords so all the information i'm going to share with you in this video
it's literally the exact things that i do on my own personal business website to generate traffic keep in mind that these things are not gonna
it's not like a overnight success it's not like you're gonna do it now and tomorrow you're gonna rank number one for big keywords
but you need to make the steps forward in order to start ranking in today's video is going to be the perfect opportunity for you
to start doing the very basics of seo but

i built a new website i want to rank on google right
right that's not how google works google's not going to give you traffic you're gonna need to earn it you need to earn that traffic
and my number one tip and the first tip on the list and probably in my eyes one of the most important things that are never talked about when speaking about
seo is direct traffic straight forward you need to get traffic to your website direct traffic
meaning somebody opens up their computer or logs into their desktop and types in a nerdsworld.com that's direct traffic you want to show google a sign of authority show them that people are actually typing in google your domain name
so going back there are four different ways in a pie chart
of generating traffic to your website you have direct traffic you got referral traffic meaning like somebody else on a different website's talking about you you got social media traffic that can go to your website and you got paid like pay-per-click i can't really hold up four i don't know my hands not really working
but maybe on this okay four there's four different ways to generate traffic to your website
and most overlook the direct so you need to figure out a way to get people directly to your website
and that's through building a brand hey you guys are watching this video right now
a percentage of you are going to google my company name
another percentage is going to go directly to the address bar and type in www.nerdsworld.com that traffic that direct traffic is hugely important so when i started getting into seo i understood that and i understood that seo takes time
so even right now i'm going to show you a chart of when i started
seo on my business and you'll look like the organic traffic was like zero zero zero doesn't mean i wasn't putting in work i just wasn't generating traffic but then you'll start seeing the increase and you'll see steadily over time
you'll see that that slope goes onwards and upwards but
going back to it in the beginning i would hand out flyers i would you know create design publish print and hand out flyers because when somebody got a flyer there's a certain percentage of people that would say hey let me check out that website and they would go directly to my website direct traffic is
a must in order to rank organically number two is are you being searched is anybody
searching your company name on google directly i mean
a nerd's world do people go to google and type in a nerd's world
is that how they're finding me in order to rank for real competitive keywords you need to show
google you're an authority and the second best way to show them that you're an authority is by people simply googling your name so
you need to build content and that's one of the reasons i have youtube look i love helping you guys there's no question that's my priority with this youtube channel
but also i love the fact that i know that you guys visit my website and i know you google my name and that helps in my authority so
you'll look in going back to that chart that i was just mentioning my organic traffic chart in canada for example it goes up the more viewers i get to these videos
the more traffic goes to my website organically the more keywords i'm ranking
this is not brain science if people are not googling your name you're not going to become the authority
you're no one you're going to be stagnant you're going to generate no traffic
and your seo efforts are going to be boo you need to get searched and whether you like it or not that means you have to create content whether it be written content in blog format or video content
similar to what we're shooting today number three is
on-page metrics user engagement how are the users that come to your website liking your website right and google doesn't know
how they like the website so i mean if i go to your website for the first time and sometimes i do and look at the site and say wow god damn that's an ugly website what were they thinking a google doesn't know what i'm saying maybe they do maybe they don't they're not listening to my conversation i hope what they're doing to judge engagement is
how long is the average person spending on your website
are they reviewing multiple pages on the site are they coming more than once i mean did they come to the website spend three minutes come back the next day the next day after the next day after
and if the answer is yes your on-page metrics are good
so there are certain things that you need to do in order to better your metrics
and the only way you're going to know what to do is by looking at stats so i mean you launched your website a month ago have you looked at the stats to see how user experience
is going if the answer is no slap yourself on your left wrist because you're doing it all wrong don't hide from the things that you want to avoid
find out what your actual stats are and figure out ways to better them i talk about it if you haven't seen my channel before but i i praise reverse engineering success look at someone you can look at my website reverse engineer success
there's a website called alexa and i'll leave a link in the description below in which you can go type in any domain that has any decent traffic and pull my metrics and then visualize okay i'm looking at the metrics i'm looking at the website
why do people like this website and what can i take from this
and i don't mean steel but i mean take inspiration from
and add to my personal website in order to better my metrics
so i mean this is a lot of back and forth hey i've been in business 14 plus years i'm still making changes almost every day to my website to increase my metrics
the higher the metrics the higher your google authority the more
traffic you're going to get to your website if google sees the average person's coming for five minutes viewing three pages viewing from all over the world these are great metrics they're gonna rank you higher on google
beyond shadow of a doubt number four is content is king and i know you're tired of this
i'm tired of hearing it because i need to put this into perspective for you in order for you to rank number one for a keyword that's going to generate you real
traffic your page has to be written better
and longer and displayed nicer than the person that's currently in first as simple as that
can you imagine how simple this is if you want to rank for
web design toronto and you want to outrank
me you need to look at my page first design more content more intensive content answer more questions show more portfolio and just straightforward you need more text
than i do so you know it doesn't sound good to write
a 10 000 word page because it's boring the user is not going to like it's just just too much but what you need to do is add some design elements that are going to break up that text
to make it easier to read but if you think you you built a new website that has one sentence of text on a page that you're going to outrank somebody that has 2 000 words of text you are mistaken it's not gonna happen under any circumstances
ever never ever ever ever so now it's time to go back and rework those pages your your client in your eyes like if you're a business owner i here remember i'm a veteran i'm a dinosaur to this game
i cannot tell you how many times i've heard a business owner say
chris my clients they want a minimum website they don't want to read text oh my god
like what oh no google is telling us they want to see text they want to see
images they want to see it laid out properly
meaning the h1 header h2 header of the page
needs to incorporate a keyword the url needs to incorporate the keyword like this is some basic basic how will google know what your page is about if you're not going to tell them there's guidelines to this i'm not just
inventing this your anchor text anything that's linked
needs to have a keyword in it there has to be a certain level of keyword density you need to incorporate the keyword in the text
and if you don't google does not know what the page is about
or does not realize how important that keyword is to you
and for the most part each page with the exception of a few things
like a home page each page should be targeting one specific
key word and keyword group
i don't know what happens when i start talking i never itch my nose but i find when i start getting excited my nose gets itchy hopefully that's a sign of good luck or something like that let's just jump into the
next number five is understanding keywords
and really valuing long tail keywords if you're new to this or even if you're old i've experienced it today a client that we're doing an seo jumpstart for i'm gonna leave nameless uh one of my seo gurus gail submitted what their recommendations are to start the site like which keywords to start targeting in month one
and the client came back and said you're targeting all these really
weak keywords like the keywords only have a hundred
less volume per month organically and we're a big business we want to go for those 10 000
search volumes per month and then i you know before i jumped in and interjected with my opinion
i looked at their stats they've been around since 2012
so eight plus years the best month organically that they've ever gotten meaning the most traffic they've ever got from google organically was four people four
people so then i have to jump back into the conversation with gail and say gail your recommendations were good let's not target those big keywords that are highly competitive
for those people that have been working on them for years when you're starting out to this you need to target keywords that are smaller
not as competitive longer tail easier and when i mean longer tail i mean instead of targeting

currently sit for web design that's an incredible keyword generate generates me 9 900 visitors per month but that's besides the fact
i don't want to target web design i want to go longer tail so i would go something like best web designer in toronto there are more words incorporated in the keyword or keyword phrase but
the competition is lower because the volume is lower
but if you're new to this you need to target those type of things which we call low hanging fruits right a low for hanging fruit is like you can just grasp it you don't need to jump you don't need to get a ladder you don't need to stand on someone's back you can grab it and eat it eat the fruits of your labor
that's the reason why we go for long tail keywords and that's hugely important and actionable this is stuff you can really do
so i'm sitting here took my jacket off damn in the video it looks like i have no neck at all but
uh what can i say i missed a number and i thought i would
interject in and talk to you about that number right now
so i missed number six which is a click-through rate ctr is hugely important so
it's one thing if you're ranking for a certain keyword
it's another thing your ultimate objective should actually be for the user to click on your page you want to make the title and description attractive
click-through rate is everything i use things like number one
or top or best and i always incorporate the keyword i'm attempting to rank for on my title and description and say hello to my little friend no i didn't kill the line
number seven is testimonials you need them
you need google testimonials you need to put effort into
them what you need to do is start strategizing putting it on your calendar when you sell a product
or a service whatever it may be follow up with that client seven days later or seven days after they've received it and ask them for an honest opinion and a link
to your google if you want to become the authority in any industry you need to show google that you are an authority through testimonials a landing page is a page on your website that is created with one sole purpose
for the person that is googling the keyword that
is on that landing page
chris that's pretty confusing okay so if i want to rank
number one for new york city seo which i think i currently do in canada so if you're in canada and type in new york city seo
i'm pretty sure i'm number one i need to create a landing page
specifically on that topic
pretty simple right so i've created a landing page it looks like my other page is on my website
but the content like url the text etc incorporates the word new york city seo and second to that i do not want to incorporate that
into my navigation so i mean that page is not on my menu it's not on my top menu it's not on my bottom menu really it's nowhere to be found on the site the only way a user is going to find that
actual landing page is if they google that exact
word like new york city seo a lot of my success through seo and generating traffic is
surely through creating landing pages really understand the value and i don't expect you to learn landing pages in my 30-second
speech it's something that you need to dedicate more time
to and once again blog post is for teaching and educating your user but a landing page
is meant to promote your service or product specifically
number nine is updating your website regularly
just make it part of your day it could be a small update it could be a big update but
it needs to be updated and most of the time that's with like a new product that just came in or a new service that has come in
or just you want to revamp the site like think about a retail store that's successful they change the windows maybe every week every two weeks when new products come in or if the season changes
what or if something's really selling well and they really want to promote it they're going to feature that in the store you need to do the same you need to change things up if people if you want people to return to your website you need to be making changes if you're in an industry like myself web development it's not that exciting the average person is not going to come to check it out three times four times so i create a blog because a blog is giving free information and that's a reason
for people to continually come back number 10 is to promote
your business on social media and web 2.0
sounds simple sounds chris i'm on social media all day
i get it but you're not linking to the pages that you should be
okay think outside the box you're not simply
putting a tweet out and saying hey check out my website and linking to the home page your website
you need to be linking to the blog post you need to be linking to
uh the landing pages or to the service pages using the proper
hashtags in order to generate that traffic
from social media which is called social signals directly to your website so when you post a new blog and let's say it took two hours to create that blog you publish it
now i want you to spend two hours in promoting that blog on facebook twitter linkedin instagram number eleven is to submit your business website to local directories so so simple simply go to google
type in i'm from toronto so i would type in toronto online business directories or i would type in canada business directories or if i want to be more specific i could type in
like digital marketing agency directories or online graphic design directories or seo agency directories it's endless
you want to ensure that your nap your name address and phone number is correct on
all and you want to link to your home page so so
simple understand that when you submit that free listing you will
get email in return in which the directory is going to say hey thanks for signing up for this free directory but hey if you pay a fee of 50 or 100 or 500 per month we'll give you a feature
and my answer to that is no what i want you to do is focus on
free local directories my final number 12 reddit
reddit stumbled upon any of these question and answer type
websites i want you to start spending some time on them my favorite is reddit so i'll go into a message board that's for seo or for web development and i'll simply answer the questions from the users and at the bottom of my authentic answer it will not be a blatant
promotion of my website or spam on my website
but i'll say something along the lines of this you know here's my answer and at the bottom it'll be like well i've created a blog on my website that answers a lot of similar questions that you're asking right now here's a link
and that's a genuine answer and i'm genuinely trying to help
this individual but i'm also getting a link to my website which will generate traffic
i started like high octane i dropped down a little bit
i got deep into the conversation i became passionate
seo something that excites me guys you know
in my spare time i take let's say i take an hour hot
tub every morning uh and sometimes in the evening and what i do in that hour is i normally watch my competitors videos
and it's not anybody in particular it's like i skim
every day i try to find a new person a new guru and i watch it first of all i want to learn
i want to hear what they have to say but i'm often amazed at how bad the information is
because remember this they can't fake me they might be able to fake you they can't fake me
they can they can talk a good talk sound good and passionate enthusiastic when i go to their website and pull their numbers like i mean their actual traffic
i'm like wow this person looked good on camera
they sounded like they knew what they were doing
but in fact they're not generating any traffic themselves
so it's hard for me because there's a lot of people out there like this and i don't want you to judge the number of subscribers
based on how good or how bad they are at seo i see some people with 300 subscribers
that know a hell of a lot more about seo than those people that have 30 000 subscribers so uh that's my i guess that's my video for today i have nothing else to say
